Coton Manor

Coton Manor house and gardenCoton Manor Gardens is one of those delightful English gardens that doesn't need a huge stately home or a famous aristocratic family name to make an impression. Tucked away in the Northamptonshire countryside near the village of Coton, it is a beautifully maintained private garden surrounding a rather handsome manor house, and is particularly well known for its colourful planting and peaceful atmosphere.

The present Coton Manor dates largely from the early 17th century, although there has been a house on the site for considerably longer.

The manor has been home to the same family for generations and remains a private residence, which gives the gardens a pleasantly personal feel rather than that of a formal visitor attraction.

The gardens cover around ten acres and are divided into a variety of different areas, each with its own character. There are formal lawns and borders close to the house, woodland gardens, ponds and quieter areas where the planting becomes more naturalistic. The gardens are particularly impressive in spring, when the woodland is filled with colour from rhododendrons, azaleas and other flowering plants.

One of the highlights is the Water Garden, where streams and ponds provide a wonderfully tranquil setting. The sound of running water, combined with the surrounding planting, makes this one of those places where you can happily slow down and simply enjoy being somewhere peaceful.

The Herbaceous Border provides another explosion of colour later in the season, with a huge variety of plants providing interest through the summer. Coton Manor has clearly been designed by people who actually enjoy gardening rather than simply wanting something that looks impressive from the front door.

Wildlife is another attraction, with birds, butterflies and other creatures making good use of the carefully managed surroundings.

The gardens are generally open to visitors during selected periods of the year, particularly in the spring and summer, and they also occasionally take part in charity open-garden events. It is worth checking opening arrangements before setting off, as this isn't somewhere that operates like a major National Trust property with doors open every day.

Coton Manor is unlikely to satisfy anyone looking for enormous state rooms, miles of parkland or grandiose architecture — but that really isn't what it is about. Its appeal lies in the garden itself, and there is something rather refreshing about visiting a place where the emphasis is firmly on horticulture, tranquillity and enjoying the surroundings.

For garden lovers, Coton Manor is a real Northamptonshire gem. It is pretty, peaceful and beautifully looked after, and provides a welcome change of pace after some of the enormous estates we've visited.

Small in comparison with Chatsworth, perhaps, but definitely not short on charm.
