Coventry Rugby
It has to be one of the best names in rugby, although I suspect the residents of Coventry have become so accustomed to it that they no longer raise a smile. Butts Park Arena is home to Coventry Rugby, one of England's oldest rugby clubs, founded way back in 1874. Despite a few ups and downs over the years, the club retains a proud identity and a loyal following.
The ground has recently acquired a new name, the Nick Newbold Stadium, in honour of a long-serving club director and supporter. However, plenty of people will continue to call it Butts Park, and I suspect the name will be around for many years yet.
The Ground
Butts Park is a relatively compact stadium with a capacity of around 5,250. It has one principal seated stand, the XL Motors Stand, with standing areas around the remainder of the pitch.It isn't a grand stadium, but it does the job well and it is definitely one of the better Championship stadiums. The main stand provides the best facilities and a good view of the action, while standing elsewhere gives you that traditional rugby-club experience of being close to the pitch.
The ground is shared with other sporting activities, but rugby remains the main attraction on Coventry matchdays. It has a much more intimate feel than the big Premiership venues, and you can watch a game without feeling you need binoculars to follow the action.
Getting There and Admission Prices
One of the great advantages of Butts Park is its location. It is close to Coventry city centre, making it relatively easy to reach without a car.
Coventry railway station is approximately a 15-minute walk away, although there are also buses and taxis available. The walk is straightforward enough, and you can always stop in the city centre for a drink before heading to the ground.
If you are driving, the postcode is CV1 3GE. There are around 450 parking spaces on site, with additional car parks within walking distance. Matchday parking is £6, although spaces can be limited, so arrive early and follow the club's guidance.
Admission prices are another attraction. Tickets bought in advance are cheaper than those purchased on the day, when a £2 surcharge applies. Check the club's ticketing page for the price of your chosen fixture, as tariffs vary.
Food and Drink
Coventry has made a decent effort with its matchday catering. There are food vans and freshly prepared food available around the stadium, alongside the usual bars and refreshments.The clubhouse and main stand provide places to meet fellow supporters before the game, and the atmosphere is generally relaxed and welcoming.
One particularly encouraging development for 2026–27 is the range of matchday offers. The club has advertised a pie and a pint for £5, which is a refreshing change from the eye-watering prices charged at some larger sporting venues.
That's the sort of deal that deserves a mention in a rugby review!
Atmosphere
Coventry supporters are proud of their club, and there is a genuine community feel about matchdays. The compact nature of the ground helps, as the crowd is close to the pitch and can make itself heard.
It doesn't have the intimidating scale of some larger stadiums, but that isn't necessarily a disadvantage. For those who prefer their rugby without acres of concrete and endless queues, Butts Park offers a pleasant alternative.
The Verdict
Butts Park Arena may not be the biggest or most glamorous ground in English rugby, but it has plenty going for it. Its central location, friendly atmosphere and sensible approach to matchday catering make it a worthwhile destination for rugby supporters.
The admission prices are also far more approachable than those at some of the bigger clubs, particularly if you book ahead.
Old Moaner's verdict: A proper rugby club in a compact stadium, with decent food, good transport links and a name that is guaranteed to raise a smile. What's not to like?
