Harlow Carr




If you think Yorkshire is all dry-stone walls, sheep and miserable weather, a visit to RHS Harlow Carr near Harrogate may come as something of a surprise.

Tucked into the countryside on the edge of the spa town, Harlow Carr is one of the Royal Horticultural Society's major gardens and is a wonderfully relaxed place to spend a few hours — or considerably longer if you are anything like me and keep finding another path that looks worth investigating.

Ripon




Ripon may be small, but it packs an impressive amount of history into its compact city centre. Tucked into the North Yorkshire countryside, it is one of England's oldest cities and makes a particularly pleasant stop if you are exploring the Yorkshire Dales or visiting nearby attractions.

Thirsk




Thirsk is a delightful North Yorkshire market town, sitting between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

Its attractive cobbled market place, historic buildings and traditional shops make it a pleasant place to explore, but for many visitors there is one particular reason for coming here: James Herriot.

York is one of those cities where you can walk around for five minutes and start feeling slightly inadequate because practically every building seems to be older than your house.

Romans came here, Vikings came here, medieval kings came here and tourists have been arriving ever since.
