Japan is one of those countries where you quickly realise that things are done rather differently from at home.

And, in many cases, considerably better.

Kyoto


Kyoto is probably the Japan that most people imagine before they ever set foot in the country.

If Tokyo is the futuristic, neon-lit, relentlessly busy Japan, Kyoto is the other side of the coin. Here you get temples, shrines, traditional wooden buildings, peaceful gardens, narrow lanes and geisha hurrying along streets that look as though they have barely changed for centuries.

Tokyo


I have never been a great fan of big cities.

Usually, the bigger they get, the less I like them. Too many people, too much traffic, too much concrete and far too much noise. So Tokyo should, in theory, have been exactly the sort of place I would hate.

It wasn't.
