Gallipoli


The Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey is one of those places where the landscape makes the history almost impossible to escape.

Today it is green, peaceful and remarkably beautiful, with wooded hills, beaches and views across the Dardanelles. Yet in 1915 this same landscape became the scene of one of the most disastrous campaigns of the First World War.

Istanbul



There are plenty of cities that claim to be where East meets West, but Istanbul can make the claim rather more convincingly than most.

This is the city where two continents actually meet. The Bosphorus separates Europe from Asia, with Istanbul sitting on both sides of it, and a short ferry ride can quite literally take you from one continent to another.

Troy




There are some historical sites where you can stand and immediately feel the importance of what happened there.

Troy is slightly different. Here, you are standing somewhere that was already famous more than 2,000 years ago — and where the line between history and legend is still wonderfully blurred.
